Moderating for Dummies.

#1
INTRODUCTION: Welcome to Moderating 101 because there are people who don't know how to moderate. So a few of us have come together to compile a guide for the newbie mods. We are not complete experts but we have been modding for quite a while, so this should help you on your way to moderate. Please note that this is just a guide, not a strict guideline on how to moderate. Please also note that though I do have experience moderating, I'm not the most experienced, I was merely encouraged by other moderators to make this and received some help from them. If you have any questions, I highly suggest that you ask someone for help and tips and tricks on how to moderate and watch other people moderate, not just one person.

Section I - Rules.
Section II - Appropriate Punishments.
Section III - The Menu.
Section IV - Menu Commands.
Section V - Some Advice and Tips.

Section I - Rules.
Knowing the rules is something every staff member should know. If a person is breaking the rules and the staff member doesn't know that there is a rule against it, that staff member essentially let that happen. Most of the rules are very generic and very general. It shouldn't be hard to know most of them. Just some servers have more specific rules depending on game mode and preferences. I highly suggest that people look at the rules and pay attention to them.

Section II - Appropriate Punishments.
If a person broke the rule, you probably should warn or point it out in case they do it again, but warning them isn't actually required. I know a lot of mods and other staff members who don't know how to react to someone breaking a rule, so here we are now.
Disrespect/Trolling/Racism - Disrespect and trolling can be solved with a simple gag or mute. If the problem persists, feel free to kick them. If it keeps happening, feel free to kick them again if and only if the problematic player keeps disrespecting. Worse case scenario, ban the player for a couple of days. Two to four days usually is enough for a disrespecting player.
Going Outside of Map or Illegal Areas - If a player does this, tell them to come back into the map and if they refuse or go back out, just teleport them back into the map. If the player accidentally fell out or something of the sort and ask to be teleported back, just teleport them back into the map.
Mic Spamming and Chat Spamming - Normally, I would warn them, but warning is not required. So if they refuse, just gag or mute them.
Inappropriate Sprays - If a person has an inappropriate (pornographic or sexual) spray, tell them to not spray it again. If they refuse, just kick them. We're supposed to be a server for all ages, so younger players probably shouldn't see it.
Anything Else I Didn't Mention - It's either common sense or a server specific problem. If it is the former, do what you feel is fit or ask for some help. If it is the latter, ask someone if you don't know what to do.

Section III - The Menu.
There are a number of features that the menu has, but not all menus look alike. If you are of a lower rank, your menu will have less on it compared to that of a higher rank. Different servers have different menus and different game modes have different menus. I'll just briefly explain it.
To access the menu on our servers, you can type !menu in the chat and a window will pop up. If you're lazy and you don't want to type it, you can bind your menu to a key. This can be done two ways, but you must open up the console first which will be your ~ key. For these examples, I will bind the menu to my 8 key.
1. Bind 8 "say !menu"
NOTE: When you do it this way, you're basically saying a phrase in the chat, so this will show up in the chat.
2. Bind 8 "ulx menu"
NOTE: When you do it this way, this will not show up in the chat.
Menu can be brought up by any player, even if they are not a donator.

Section IV - Menu Commands.
When you open up menu, your selection of commands will be there. I already explained that different servers/gamemodes/ranks have different menus, as there are sometimes specific commands in the menu. Please also make note that these are commands that staff members abuse. If we catch you abusing your powers, then click this link.
Under the Chat Tab - Asay is available to every player, this allows a player to type a message to admins but only players who are moderator or above are able to see the message. Gag will cut off a player's voice chat so no one will be able to hear them, this is available to VIP players and higher. Mute will prevent a player from being able to type in chat, this is available to most VIP players and higher. Psay will let you send a message to a specific player currently on the server, this feature is available to everyone.
Under the Teleport Tab - These commands are available to PRO donators and higher ranks. Bring brings a player to you. Goto will allow you to go to a player. Return sends a player to where they were originally after being teleported. Send teleports one player to a second player who is not you. Teleport is almost like bring, but you teleport the player to where you are looking.
Under the Utility Tab - This tab is pretty useless unless you are a moderator or higher. Ban bans a player currently playing on the server for a specific amount of time. Banid allows you to ban a player who is not on the server, you enter their steamid and set a ban length. Kick kicks a player from the server (NOTE: If the player comes back, you probably shouldn't do anything to them unless they start problems again). Map changes the map.
Under the Vote Tab - Voteban casts a vote out to every player currently on the server to see if the players want to ban a specific player. Votekick casts a vote out to every player currently on the server to see if the players want to kick a specific player. Votemap nominates a specific map and players will choose if they want to go to that map.
Other Tabs I didn't mention - They're pretty useless most of the time or to most players or they're server specific.
Most of these commands are ones that you can also type into chat. Most of these can be accessed in the menu, so I will not explain them again. I'll just make one example and this example can be applied to most other commands:
!gag Dark
Most of the time, you do not need to type out the target's full name, so typing a few letters is enough if the server can recognize which player you are targeting:
!gag Dar
But if there are multiple players who have the same letter sequence (Dark, Dare, Dart) then the server will not recognize the player you want. You can fix this problem in two ways: you can add more letters to their name (!gag Dark) or use the menu.

Section V - Some Advice and Tips.
Since this is a very general guide for all the servers and game modes, you may need to ask someone for advice if you have questions about how to moderate on a specific server.
Be nice and friendly to players, but also don't be afraid to be stern or lay down the law when needed. Also, every staff member messes up from time to time. Sometimes we act like assholes. That's okay for the most part as long as it doesn't happen too often or starts hurting the server.
Encourage players to donate to the server. Donations keep the server up and running. Also encourage players to become a regular of the server, regulars keep the server alive.
Also have fun while you're watching over the server. Its not a job, so you don't have to act like it is but you can if you want to.
If I missed anything, please respond to this thread with whatever I missed :3
